Two generations of Jandas, working together in the tradition of the Jandas who came before.
Washington born: Resident for 50+ years. Graduated Renton High
School. Attended Seattle Community College, Apprentice Carpenter
technical school program for 4 years. Journeyman carpenter and
union member for 16 years, with work on jobs throughout Western
Washington, from Bellingham to Tacoma.
John recalls that his carpentry work experience dates from his ninth year, when he learned to take off the hinges on his father's well-stocked toolbox and use the tools during the day. Life was good then, as long as he remembered to put the tools back and replace the hinge screws before Dad got home. Father and sons built their own home and numerous family members' homes, while the boys were growing up. Pride in craftsmanship was learned early.
Created Janda Construction Enterprises, an Independent General Contracting firm, in 1987. Based at Marblemount, the firm has worked at project sites throughout northwest Washington. Over 30 years total construction related work experience. Special skills in fine cabinetry, joinery and metalworking.
Wife and partner of John, Mary is in charge of the office. Keeping track of John (who would rather be at the job site or on the road instead of in the office) is her most difficult task. Payroll, taxes, keeping track of vendor accounts and job billings and the like fill up her office time. Thank heavens for the computer! Aside from hours devoted to the business, five children (four at home), teaching 7th grade full time, volunteering for Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Youth Group, and various community and school committees keep her out of trouble.
Trained as a journeyman carpenter, Mike (brother of John)
completed a tech school apprenticeship program at Seattle
Community College at the start of his career. He has had
extensive work experience with commercial construction, including
concrete work, layout, etc. With over 30 years experience in the
construction trades in the Seattle area, he is very versatile and
effective as a jobsite crew boss.
His background equips him well for dialog with architects and project management personnel. He is very good taking a concept and fully realizing it, and he brings this ability to work out the problems involved in our more challenging commercial and residential projects. Mike came to work for Janda Construction in 1992, after working in urban construction for firms like Lease-Crutcher-Lewis (Redmond, WA), B&G Construction (Redmond, WA), and Baugh Construction (Seattle, WA).
James has had many of the same opportunities growing up as his
dad (John). However, he never had to take the hinge screws out of
the toolbox. John gave him free access to the tools and he jumped
at the opportunity. The only thing that he hasn't learned about
the tools is to put them away. He is developing his work attitude
well, and his skills are far ahead of his peer group. He is an
asset to the firm and is well on his way toward carrying on the
family tradition of craftsmanship.
